AOWE Certification School
The Authorized Onsite Wastewater Evaluator (AOWE) Certification School is designed to provide professionals with the necessary education, training, and certification to conduct site evaluations and issue permits for on-site wastewater systems in accordance with North Carolina General Statute § 130A-336.2. This statute establishes the framework for Licensed Soil Scientists to assess, design, and certify wastewater systems, ensuring they meet state and local health and environmental standards. Applicants must be an LSS and have 5 years experience designing septic systems.

Anyone may take the class, however, applicants seeking an AOWE certification must be a Licensed Soil Scientist with 5 years experience designing onsite wastewater systems.

All applicants must complete an approved Authorized Onsite Wastewater Evaluator (AOWE) Certification Course. Upcoming courses can be found on this page. The AOWE training is typically offered once per year.

All applicants must complete an application for certification. The exams are administered and certifications are issued by the North Carolina Onsite Wastewater Contractor Inspector Certification Board (NCOWCICB).
Available exam dates will be listed on the application for exam provided in class.
The application must include proof of Professional Liability (E&O) Insurance. -

Authorized Onsite Wastewater Evaluators are required to complete 12 Hours of in person continuing education each year. The classes must be approved by the NCOWCICB.
