How to get a Septic Installer License in North Carolina

Navigating the certification process for septic system installers and inspectors in North Carolina can be a little confusing. This guide aims to simplify the process, providing step-by-step instructions and important details to ensure you're well-prepared. Installer Certification:

1. Mandatory Introduction Class:

  • All applicants must complete an 18-hour Introduction class.

  • The 18-hour introduction class is offered by Onsite Wastewater Professionals.

2. Additional Class Hours:

  • Grade Level I & II: 6 additional hours

  • Grade Level III: 9 additional hours

  • Grade Level IV: 12 additional hours

3. Exam Requirements:

  • Required for Grade Level III & IV only.

  • Ensure all required documents are submitted to NCOWCICB at least 15 days before the exam date.

  • Exam dates and application forms are available on the NCOWCICB website.

4. Submission of Application Package:

  • Complete a simple application. No experience, degree, or previous education required.

  • We will assist you with putting together the application package in the 18-Hour class.

  • Mail to: NCOWCICB P O Box 132 Lawsonville, NC 27022 and Include:

    • Completed application

    • Attendance certificates

    • Exam application (if required - Level III and Level IV only)

    • Certification fee (varies by grade level - see below)

5. Certification Fees Due to the NCOWCICB:

  • Grade Level I: $150

  • Grade Level II: $200

  • Grade Level III: $250

  • Grade Level IV: $300

6. Continuing Education & Renewal:

  • Certifications expire on December 31st annually.

  • Renewals due by November 15th.

  • Continuing education hours vary by grade level and are in addition to initial certification hours.

  • Continuing education classes are offered by Onsite Wastewater Professionals

7. Grade Level Details:

  • Each grade level determines the type of system an installer can install.
